Case Study

Remember the North Cape oil spill off Charleston? We were asked to participate in the clean-up effort. Our Ninigret and Beavertail sensor data was fed into the hydrodynamic models to predict where the slick would wash ashore. Afterwards, experiments were run to test the accuracy of the model's predictive powers. For hindcasting, our data, Coast Guard data, and NWS data were loaded into the model and the corresponding outputs compared to where the spill actually hit shore. Only our BVT data correctly predicted where the spill actually washed up on shore. Since then the scientific community has continued to use our sensor data because of its superior accuracy.
